The Chancellor, Al-Qalam University Katsina, Mal. Aminu Alhassan Dantata has received update on the university’s progress and challenges from January to August, 2020. Management of the university, periodically meet with the Chancellor to present report on the state of the university including future plans.
Leading the management team to Kano on Sunday, 13th September 2020, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Garki Ado informed the Chancellor that the second combined convocation ceremony of the university scheduled for 19th and 20th June, 2020 could not take place because of Covid-19 pandemic.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that “The pandemic has resulted in the inability of the university like other tertiary institutions in the country to maintain normal academic calendar and to generate funds through students’ registration putting a lot of stress on personnel cost and ability to continue funding capital projects”.
He said that the university has devised other ways of living with the pandemic as online lectures for students started in June, 2020 and by August, 2020, the 15th matriculation ceremony for fresh students admitted into the university was held virtually.
Prof. Shehu G. Ado informed the Chancellor that all the nine undergraduate programmes which went through accreditation in October/November 2019, received full accreditation status from the results released by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in March, 2020 and assured that the university would work hard to repeat the excellent performance in four programmes due for accreditation before the end of the year.
The Vice-Chancellor said before the pandemic, Sir Usman Nagogo Female Hostel and Prof. Shehu Garki Ado lecture hall were commissioned, Institute of Arid Zone Studies (ISAZS) has taken-off and to enhance the university’s response to students welfare and support services, Counselling & Human Development Centre and Sports Directorate were established.
Speaking after receiving the report, the Chancellor, Mal. Aminu Alhassan Dantata appreciated the visit and expressed happiness on the steady progress the university has been recording over the years. The Chancellor assured the Management of his continuous support morally and otherwise at all times.
The University Management paid a similar visit to Katsina and Kazaure emirates. On Wednesday, 16th September 2020, the Management was received by the emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmuminu Kabir Usman and the following day, Thursday, 17th September, the Vice-Chancellor led members of Management to Kazaure to share the university’s progress report with the emir, Alhaji Najib Hussain Adamu.
While appreciating the management for carrying them along, the emirs assured of their continuous support and encouragement for the university to excel.
